About Us: Board of Directors
Orenda Education and Orenda Charter School District†is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.†† Each member serves the parent organization and the charter school with five campuses and its 1,500 students as their primary focus.† Each board member is appointed for a two-year term by the board nominating committee. †The appointment of board members and election of officers are conducted annually in July or August.
The duties and responsibilities of the governing board are:
1. Establish goals and evaluate outcomes†††††††††††††††† 4.† Hire/evaluate the CEO and delegate all administrative responsibilities
2. Adopt & evaluate policies†††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††† 5.† Communicate with the community
3. Approve the organization and charter school budgets
Andrew Cottrill, Board President
Travis C. Graves, Vice-President
Mr. Graves has been a resident of Georgetown, Texas since 2001 and was born and raised in Texas. Currently he is employed at Advanced Micro Devices on the Sales & Operations Team.
Prior experience includes 19+ years in Mfg Finance and Systems Implementations at Dell (7 years), Qualcomm in San Diego, CA (2 years) and Motorola in Seguin, TX (10 years). He received a B.B.A. degree in Accounting from Texas State University in 1988 and a M.B.A. degree in Finance from Texas State University in 1998.
Mr. Graves also serves as President of V&K Sales which specializes in the distribution of packaging materials.
Mr. Graves and his wife, Lorraine, have five children.
Herman Matthews, Ph.D., Member
Dr. Matthews held faculty positions in physics at Oklahoma State, Stanford University, Florida Atlantic University and the University of Texas. At Florida Atlantic University, he was the founding University Ombudsman and at the University of Texas, he was one of the founding faculty consultants for the Center for Teaching Effectiveness.
Dr. Matthews has been exploring and studying how we learn, how we communicate and how we change behavior for 30 years. In 1978, he resigned from academia to start his own business as a consultant. Over the last 30 years, Dr. Matthews has designed and facilitated several hundred workshops and seminars with various organizations such as Fortune 500 corporations, start-up companies, non-profit and government organizations.
In 1981, he founded the Center for Exploratory Studies.
Elizabeth Mealy, Ph.D., Member
Dr. Mealy has a background in exercise physiology. Early in her career she was the Director of the Cardiopulmonary Laboratory at the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic at the NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas.
While involved with the medical team for Apollo 17-18 she completed her Ph.D. in Community Health Science - Epidemiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. She received her M.Ed. and B.S. degrees in Exercise Physiology from Texas Tech University.
Dr. Mealy has developed health and wellness programs for universities and healthcare systems. Most recently she has been Coordinator of Special Projects for the Georgetown Healthcare System. In this capacity she has developed two coeducational residential substance abuse treatment facilities for felony offenders that have been very successful. She also is currently on the faculty for Texas State Technical College in the Workforce Development Department.
Dr. Mealy is past Chair of the Georgetown Area Community Foundation. She has also served on the City Parks and Recreation Board, Handcrafts Unlimited, Art Space Project and First United Methodist Church.
Mick Swope, Member
Mr. Swope is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) with more than 19 years of experience in the information security industry.† He currently works as an ITT Security Engineer at Hewlett-Packard where he designs and implements global solutions to ensure HP is protected from today's advanced cyber threats.† Mr. Swope has more than 20 years combined service in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserve in the Intelligence and Information Operations arenas.†
Mr. Swope is currently serving on the board of the Georgetown Running Club as Director of Volunteer and Social Services and he leads several running groups in the Georgetown and Round Rock areas.† He has been married to his wife, Cathy, for almost 19 years and they have two children attending Gateway College Prep.
